The Year of Ants

May 29, 2008 / by sherryberry

It's the strangest thing...maybe some strange cosmos type phenomenon.  Every so often I will happen upon a summer in which my feet become drawn to ant beds.  These summers are painful.  They are intense and they seem to last forever.  This is my summer of 2008.

It has started.  Innocently enough I went with my sister to a place called "Children's Harbour".  This is in Alexander City, AL.  A very cute place with a lighthouse and chapel, we thought it to be a great place to work on our attempt at photography.  We were walking along the edge of Lake Martin, when I saw it.  It was a megatropolis for ants.  I warned my sister who was a few steps ahead of me.  She stopped dead in her tracks.  Looking down at her feet as if a snake were about to strike, she asked where were the ants.  I pointed to the brown monstrocity that was about a foot away and we both successfully avoided the mound.

My sister stopped to take a picture of a birdhouse in the middle of the lake.  I didn't find the birdhouse worthy of my portfolio so I waited.  Waiting patiently I found the all too familiar sensation of my feet burning.  I looked down at my flipflop cladded feet and saw several little brown specks taking their fury out on my poor feet.  I took off the flipflops and started swatting my feet profusely.  My sister asked "Did you get ants?".  Uh, Duh!!!  A few seconds I saw her swatting her feet.  She later told me that she was thinking when she asked about my attack "Oh Bless her heart!", and then looked down and said "Aw, Shoot!".  I guess it is her summer for ant bites too.

We survived, but I'm now anticipating my next attack, because it will be inevitable this summer.  As the planets align and someone's star will be in the south-northern sky, I will be bitten again.
